White clover tolerates low mowing well and can be used in hanging baskets and patio pots as a native, nectar-rich alternative to other trailing plants. Belonging to the legume family it supports soil health through nitrogen balancing when the correct species of Rhizobium bacteria is present on its roots. Because of this, it is ideal for borders and lawns. Its flowers are attractive to bees, and its seeds germinate under cool moist conditions in the spring, early summer, or autumn.
Flowers: June to September.
Sow: shallow sow in autumn for germination the following spring.
Lifecycle: perennial broadleaf weed which spreads by seed, and by low creeping branched stems which root at the nodes.
Best for: sunny borders or meadows on a variety of soil types and pH ranges.
Also known as: Dutch clover, honeysuckle clover, white trefoil, and purple wort.
