Primula Veris – Cowslip Seeds

£5.00£28.00

Producing bright yellow bell-shaped flowers enclosed in a green tubed casing, cowslips flower in April and May and favour the conditions of open woodland, meadows, and pastures. Nectar-rich, its clusters of nodding flower heads attract bees, butterflies, and moths and its leaves provide a food source for many species of caterpillars.

The leaves are slightly bitter but can be used in salads or cooked like spinach. The flowers have a lovely citrusy flavour and bring colour to dishes when used as a garnish.

The cowslip seeds in this pack must be sown in autumn as they need a prolonged period of cold to promote germination the following spring. They can be sown in seed trays or sown directly into a pot or onto bare soil in your garden border.

This semi-evergreen wildflower brightens borders early in spring with upright stems of bell-shaped, fragrant yellow flowers. Flourishing in semi-shady sites, cowslips provide vital forage for pollinating insects and are an essential larval food plant for the Duke of Burgundy butterfly.
Flowers: April and May.
Sow: shallow sow in autumn for germination the following spring.
Lifecycle: perennial, germinating quickly after sowing.
Best for: sunny borders or meadows on well-drained sandy or chalky soil.
