Rethinking Weeds
& Growing Wild Seeds

BRINGING BRITISH FLORA BACK INTO OUR GARDENS & GREEN SPACES

SEED MERCHANTS SINCE 1879

How It Started

Our family has nurtured a deep connection with the landscapes of the Kent countryside for over 145 years.

It all started in 1879 when Thomas Denne and his three sons bought City Mill, in Canterbury and began producing animal feed for the city’s largest army garrison. Over the course of the next 100 years the company diversified into small seed sales and production, fertiliser distribution, grain trading, and wharfage.

Today, the fifth generation of the family manages multiple levels of agricultural seed processing and produces native wildflower seeds across 350 acres of land in Kent.

FARMING WILD SEEDS

How It’s Going

Since we first started growing wild seeds in 2018 our approach has always been to produce the most sustainable seed crop possible. We do this by working with farmers and landowners to grow our wildflowers on unproductive arable land, and also by harvesting established native meadows as part of their wider management program.

We have customised old machines that were gathering dust in our grain stores to enable us to dry, clean, and separate the seeds we harvest. At the end of the cleaning process we separate single species where possible and then design our mixtures with nature in mind, whilst ensuring that they have a balance of garden-friendly wildflowers and provide visual impact.

The Naturalised Border mix I put down last autumn has resulted in the most wonderful showing of colour in my border right through the summer.
